Mike Bargh and Warren the Rabbit from Mansfield 103FM came to school just before the Easter holidays to interview five children - Evie, Poppy, Kyra, Connor, Danny. They described a secret item, which are clues to a competition that will be posed to listeners of the Breakfast Show week starting 12th June. Empties Please!

Used printer cartridge recycling

As part of our work towards our Eco-Schools award we are committed to reducing waste and recycling more, both in school and in our homes. The Eco-Committee has been looking at ways to do this and have decided to work with a company called ‘Empties Please’. They collect and recycle used ink and toner cartridges and will donate any money raised back to us.

It’s very simple. All we have to do is collect used ink cartridges and toner cartridges and put them into the collection bin, in one of the bags provided, which is situated in the reception area in school. ‘Empties Please’ will collect the bin when it is full and then donate the money raised back to school with a certificate to display showing how much we have raised through our recycling. We may also qualify for their Green Rewards scheme if we collect enough. You can collect cartridges from absolutely anywhere – school, work, home, clubs, friends and family. The more we can collect the better and as it takes up to 1000 years for a printer cartridge to decompose it is an environmentally friendly way for you to dispose of your printer cartridges whilst helping us at the same time!

Ink cartridges accepted: original branded Cannon, HP, Lexmark and Samsung ink cartridges

Please make sure you put all cartridges in one of the bags provided before placing in the collection bin.

Swimming Gala Champions!

A HUGE congratulations to all of our Key Stage 2 swimming squad who won the swimming gala!

The gala took place on Thursday 23^rd February 2017 and was held at the Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre.

Our squad of 18 children took part in lots of races against other schools, winning the majority of the races, earning lots of points for the team and swimming away with the trophy!

The children worked brilliantly as a team and supported one another in every race. Their behaviour was superb and they represented our school fantastically. They were all a credit to the school and a pleasure to spend the morning with.

A massive thank you to Mrs Hammond and Mrs Bexon for helping us behind the scenes, on the bus and at poolside. Another massive thank you also goes out to all of the spectators who came along to support the children and the school. It was great to look up to the balcony and see so many proud faces and to hear the loud cheers!

Finally another BIG thank you to the children who made myself and Mrs Gascoigne very happy on Thursday morning. J

Maths & Science Enrichment Day at Nottingham Trent University- 22.2.17

On Wednesday 22^nd February, a group children from all across the Samworth family of primary schools were lucky enough to be invited to attend a special maths and science activity day at Nottingham Trent University. The day was planned and run by the university’s teaching students and allowed the children to experience what it might be like to be a university student themselves one day.

The lucky children to attend from Berry Hill were Campbel, Kamran, Erin, Isabella, Igor, Evan, Mia and Isla.

The day was split into 3 sections. In the morning the children were able to take part in some science and nature based activities. The first activity focussed on identifying different trees and leaves on the campus and the second involved hunting for and identifying mini beasts!

The second part of the day was made up of a tour of the university campus including the library, a lecture theatre and seminar room, the halls of residence, the student union building, the sports facility building and the crime scene house! During this time, the children were also treated to lunch in the student canteen which they all thoroughly enjoyed and which enhanced the whole student life experience.

For the last part of the day, the children took part in some maths/problem solving activities which were quite challenging but were no match for our year 5s as they worked together to explore possibilities, share and discuss ideas and solve the problems collaboratively.

All of the children really enjoyed the day and said that the university experience had been much better than they had expected. They all said they would love to go again next year! I also really enjoyed it and it was a pleasure to spend the day with such a well behaved group of children. They all showed respect to the students leading the activities and to the other children and adults. They listened well and they were fully engaged in everything that they were asked to do. I felt very proud of them and they should feel proud of themselves too, they really were Berry Hill role models!

“I really enjoyed the day. I was surprised when we did the science stuff and I didn’t like touching the mini beasts! I really enjoyed the tour as well.”

“It was really nice. The paninis were nice too! I really enjoyed the experience, looking round and seeing the lecture theatre and the debate room with the spinney chairs!”

“I was worried it was going to be like a test but it was really good and fun! I really enjoyed the day, especially making up pudding club and the paninis!”

“I found the day really fun because it was maths and science. It was really interesting and the mentors were amazing. It was good on the full tour of the university when we got to see where the students work, the library and the lecture theatre and where they live.”

The line of coins the whole school collected:

 Would stretch 28 times across the width of the school hall (hall width = 11.7m)

 Is equivalent to 238 Miss Brown’s standing on top of each other (Miss Brown’s height = 1.63m)

• All the coins weighed 11.5 stones which is the average weight of a male tiger
• We also collected 1 US dollar and 2 Euros which we donated to charity..every little helps!
• The distance of pennies laid takes us from the main entrance of the school to the gate into Berry Hill Park at the bottom of Black Scotch Lane!
• It would make a line over 3 and a half football pitches!
