Year 6

Hello

Welcome to Year 6

In our classes, there are regular adults who work with your children.

Mr Abbas - Class Teacher

Mrs Stirling-Wood - Class Teacher

Mrs Robson - Teacher and intervention

We are delighted to be working with your children and are looking forward to all of the wonderful things we will be learning together. The children are in for an exciting year in Year 6.

Please feel free to speak to any member of the Year 6 team if you have any questions or queries or contact us via the office.

Keep checking our class page for updates and our twitter account for regular updates on our learning journey through year 6. http://twitter.com/BHPSMansfield

Number Day 2023

The children had a great time on Number Day. They were tasked with building a robot that could catapult a rock - and they had to make their robot from junk. They worked hard in groups to bring their ideas to life before taking them onto the playground to launch rocks! Using their maths skills, they measured and recorded the data.

Drumming workshop

What a super morning! The children took part in a drumming workshop and showed some great rhythm. It sounded brilliant when they all played together - and some of us even got to have a go on the drum kit!

How can we alter shadows?

In Science, we've been learning about light. In this lesson, we carried out an experiement to see how moving the light source closer to an object altered the shadow. The children worked in groups and recorded their data. Apologies for the grainy photos - the lights were out!

Then, the children used the data to draw graphs. They worked carefully to make sure they were being as accurate as possible.

2023 Calendars

The children enjoyed making their calendars for next year. They made colourful background, then decorated the numbers 2023 with a variety of patters. Don't they look funky?!

6HSW performing A Visit From St Nicholas

We've been getting in the festive spirit in 6HSW this afternoon! We studied the a poem during reading this morning, then divided the lines and spent some time learning it. Here's our recital of Clement Clarke Moore's 'A Visit from St Nicholas'.

How does reflection help us to see?

In one of our Science lessons on light, the children learnt about how light reflection helps us to see objects. They made their own periscopes and then tested them out. Here are some diagrams the children drew to explain how the mirrors reflecting light mean we can see.

..and here we are making and testing the periscopes.

Design and Technology

The children have been designing playgrounds! They've looked at existing playground layouts, thought about what they would like to play on, and then drawn out their designs. Using scaled models, they've worked hard on building their designs, bringing them to life!

Christmas Jumper Day 2022

Remembrance-inspired art

For Remembrance day, the children in KS2 came together for an assembly to reflect on why we have remembrance day. Aftewards, the Year 6 children painted sunset backdrop pictures with silhouettes of soldiers visiting war graves. Here are a few examples:

Reading

Recently, our reading lessons have focused on using the text to support answers. Here are some examples of children locating the appropriate evidence in the text to prove questions:

Penny Mile

The children enjoyed creating their penny mile. 6HSW had enough coins to reach 3.2km! In total, the PTFA raised £680.93. Thank you to everyone who donated.

Wollaton Hall

At the end of Autumn 1, the whole of Year 6 went to Wollaton Hall for the day. The children participated in a workshop led by paleontologist Mary Anning, where they learnt more about her life, explored a range of fossils and learnt about the fossil record. Then, the children went on a tree trail around Wollaton Park to learn about the different types of trees.

Tree Trail in Wollaton Park

Internet safety

At the end of our internet safety computing unit, the children produced a double-page spread to show off their learning in this topic. Here are some super examples:

What do moths have to do with evolution?

The children learnt about evolution through the example of the peppered moth. We acted this out in the classroom: blue jumpers camouflaged against the blue blinds but not against the white walls, but children without jumpers on camouflaged against the walls and stood out in front of the blinds. Here are some storyboards the children created to show their understanding of the process:

Writing

This term, our English has focused around Darwin's Dragons. This is a fantastic adventure story about Syms (Charles' Darwin's assistant) getting lost overboard and stranded on an island in the Galapagos. The story follows his time on the island - where he's bitten by a giant centipede, slapped by a seal and dropped in the ocean by a golden dragon!

In writing, we've focused on developing our writing. We began by recapping some of the strucures that the children had previously learnt to embed. There are some pictures below of writing with different sentence openers and semi-colons to link independent clauses. There's also an extract from someone's independent write.

Maths - Long division

Year 6 have been learning how to use long division to divide. The children already know how to use 'bus stop' method; long division is useful for dividing bigger numbers by two digits as it's easier to check for mistakes in longer calculations. We began by learning how to carry out the process with one digit, then moved onto two. Here we are having a go at some long division questions:

...and here are some examples of the children's work:

Who was Charles Darwin?

Another significant individual that we have learnt about is Charles Darwin! He's been a prominent character in our English Writing novel as well, so it was interesting to learn more about his life and work. Here, the children answered questions about his life and then played the board game! It was a great way to embed our learning.

How can we use passwords to protect things?

Keeping our information safe and protected is extremely important, especially in a world where much of our time is spent online. We have been learning in Computing about how we can use passwords and two-factor authentication to keep uninvited guests out! In one of our lessons, we designed a system to protect a sweet machine using the skills we learnt to stay safe online. Here are two super examples:

Who was Mary Anning?

As part of our Science topic on Evolution and Inheritance, we have been learning about Mary Anning, the famous paleontologist. The children learnt about her life and work and carried out some research of their own, then produced their own information texts to explain how she became such an influential individual.
