Project -Traditional Tales
Text - 'The Little Red Hen'
Literacy Activities to support 'The Little Red Hen' :
- Listen to the story of 'The Little Red Hen'
- Discuss the features of the front cover ie title, illustration. Discuss the setting and the characters.
- As you read/ listen to the story pause periodically to discuss the characters feeling and predict what might happen next.
- At the end of the story discuss the message. Should Red Hen have eaten all the bread? What else could she have done? What would you do?
- Sequence pictures or use puppets to retell the story.
- Watch the song (in resources) this give an alternative version - discuss similarities and differences. Which ending do you prefer and why?
- Look at the words in the story - model reading from left to right. Are there any familiar letters can you spot? Some children are beginning to recognise the sight words that we call 'tricky words' - I to no go the into. Can you see any of these words as you look through the book?
Maths Activities :
- Make bread - weighing and measuring ingredients
- Make play dough bread. Use your teddies at home to have a tea party - use mathematical language as you count and compare sizes. Use different shaped cutters eg circles, triangles etc. Maybe, make a dough pizza - cut into halves and quarters, compare sizes are they equal?
- Complete the 'I Spy', counting & recording worksheet (in resources).
Creative Activities:
- Listen to and join in with the song (in resources)
- Make wooden spoon characters
- Split pin characters
- Paint/ draw/ colour characters and scenes from the story.
- Use flour to bake eg bread, cake, pizza, pies
- Create a farmyard scene (ideas in resources)
