Project -Traditional Tales 

Text - 'The Gingerbread Man' 

Literacy Activities to support 'The Gingerbread Man' :

  • Listen to the story
  • Discuss the characters
  • Talk about the beginning, middle and end of the story.
  • Join in with repeated phrases
  • Retell the story using story cards or puppets
  • Change the characters to create your own version of 'The Gingerbread Man'
  • Create and retell the story using a story map. Draw a large map ( maybe, use the back of strip of wallpaper) add scenery and characters eg make a cottage from a box or lego, make a little old man and lady, use farmyard animals and blue fabric / tissue paper for the river 
  • Model writing labels and attach to the characters -  Encourage your child hear and recognise the initial sounds eg m - man, w - wolf,  w - woman ...
  • Develop pencil control through colouring, drawing and tracing patterns.

 

Maths Activities:

  • Use the counting & I spy maths work sheets.
  • Colour by numbers
  • Bake gingerbread - look how and where numbers are used eg - look at numbers in the recipe, on scales, temperature dial, timer, count spoons of flour etc.  Decorate - counting buttons etc.  Problem solve eg I need 5 buttons - only got 2. How many more do you need? 
  • Use mathematical language first, second, third etc to order the characters chasing the gingerbread man. 
  • Use positional language: Who is in front of or behind specific characters? 
  • Use knowledge of shape and 3D shapes as you build a cottage from duplo/ lego

 

Craft Activities:

  • Design your own gingerbread person
  • Make play dough gingerbread people
  • Make puppets to retell the story
  • Make boats for a safe way for the gingerbread man to cross the river 
  • Draw, paint, collage your gingerbread man
