Year 5/6 Football – Dukeries competition

The Year 5/6 football team played their first Dukeries league fixture today. It was a fantastic game to start the competition!

We played Parkgate Academy and they were a very tough opponent. The teams were even and it was end to end action. It was a very tense game but so exciting for the audience who came out in their numbers.

In the first ten minutes of the game, the opposition struggled to get out of their own half and we dominated possession, although we lacked shots on goal. Parkgate started to come back into the game but Campbell (the captain) and William stopped them in their tracks.

However, we made a couple of substitutions with Sonny, Ashton and Jacob coming on and with those fresh legs and determination we again dominated. At the end of the 1st half it was even 0-0.

The second half started and Parkgate came out strong and worked the ball well to score. 1-0. Parkgate showed confidence and kept up with the pressure and had some one on one chances with our goalie Kamran. However, Kamran was brilliant and denied chance after chance and kept Berry Hill in the game.

It was the last couple of minutes of the game, and we decided to play Campbell in defence on his own so we could play an extra attacker. Ethan never stopped all game and continued to win the ball and play our strikers in. There were some magnificent link ups between Joshua, Ashton and Sonny. The crowd were shouting ‘SHOOT, SHOOT!’ and Charlie took on the responsibility and had a shot from distance and finally we beat the keeper to make it 1-1.

Not long after and the final whistle went. The game finished all square 1-1.

A brilliant performance from the team, real spirit and determination. The parents, carers, Mr Jenkins and I were so proud of them and gave them a massive round of applause.

Parkgate were a fantastic team, great sportsmanship and hosted really well! Thank you for the biscuits!

Man of the Match = Kamran (Goalkeeper)

  • Nottinghamshire School Games Netball County Finals

Fri 07 Jul 2017 Mrs Kendall

Wow! What a special occasion this was!

Our first team to ever be champions of Mansfield in any sport for Berry Hill and to represent us at the County Finals is a tremendous achievement. Our Year 6 netball team should be hugely proud of themselves for reaching the finals. We are so proud of you all!

The girls (and their many supporters!) gave up their free time during our school inset day to jump on the bus to Nottingham at 8.45am. The team were really excited and looking forward to a great day ahead. On arrival, they were welcomed by an Opening Ceremony for the start of the School Games Finals before competitions began. The team with their nervous excitement, entered their first game well but were unfortunately beaten. However, the girls came back stronger and after a team talk from our coaches Millie and Anais, the team grew in confidence in what was a very tough competition. Goals were scored against the very best teams from across the County and the competition was challenging.

It wasn’t to be for our girls to finish in the medals this time but they knew that they had played well and given their best which is all anyone can ask of them. We are tremendously proud of each and every one of the girls and we hope that they continue to play netball in the future with the possibility of a Mansfield Youth Team being set-up and with some of our girls even being scouted during the competition itself!

A massive thank you to the team for ALL of their hard-work during every match and to their supporters who have been there to cheer the girls along the way too! Thanks also go to Miss Pickering and Mrs Clayton for accompanying the girls to the event and we wish Mrs Gascoigne a speedy recovery from her own netball injury! A final BIG thank you to Millie and Anais Johnson, our two netball coaches from Samworth Academy who have worked brilliantly with the team through training and competitions, you’ve been excellent girls and we really appreciate your help.

Once again, congratulations to our netball girls. You will always be champions to us and thank you for being so wonderful!

    Mansfield Netball Champions 2017!

From a very proud Mrs Kendall

  • A hot week ahead!

    Sun 18 Jun 2017 Mrs Quant-Epps

It looks like we're in for some hot weather this week so please make sure your children come into school with their sun cream, hats and bottles of water.

On Tuesday and Wednesday there will be a long walk in the sun as the year 6 classes will take it in turns to learn about making pizzas as part of their enterprise research. F2 have their Sports Day on Wednesday afternoon (1.30pm) and the year 6 children will be helping with this. Friday sees KS2 Sports Day (1.15pm) and again the children will need protecting from the sun.

Also this week we have NSPCC workshops for years 5 and 6 on Wednesday and Thursday morning. Representatives from the NSPCC will be collecting sponsor money from us on Thursday and we'll let you know how much we have raised for Buddy's Workout as soon as we know. There has been so much support for this and it's a big thank you from us.

On Monday, Samworth Church Academy uniform staff will be coming in to measure the year 6 pupils in preparation for September.

What exciting times! Thank you to those who have brought in certificates about achievements out of school to share with us - we look forward to hearing more from them all. There is so much talent in our school and it is great to find out more about what the children are up to.

    Year 5/6 Netball League

Samworth Academy hosted a year 5/6 Netball League over the last couple of weeks on Tuesday 16th May and Tuesday 23rd May. The event was organised by the Mansfield Primary School Sport Partnership which our school is part of.

We were lucky enough to have so many girls wanting to play that we were able to enter 2 teams!

The two weeks couldn’t have been more different…one week was pouring rain, windy and cold weather, whilst the second week was blue skies and lovely, warm sunshine! Luckily, our supporters stayed to watch the girls on both occasions, so a BIG thank you to them!

The netball that was played on both nights was really good and our girls improved with every match that they played. It was great to see all of the girls play as a supportive team and in a respectful way against the other schools. Overall, our teams finished in 4th and 6th positions.

Thank you to all of the girls for a great couple of weeks and for some fantastic training sessions too.

From a proud Mrs Kendall and Mrs Gascoigne. J
