Explore

Our Spring term project was a Geography based unit, exploring our big question: Is home where the heart is? The children though about what this meant to them, which led us to think about what we mean by 'home', and how we do (or don't) look after our home - both locally and on a more global scale. 

We began our Explore project by recapping key Geography skills, before moving onto learning about the impact of climate change on our world with a heavy focus on Antarctica, which was the subject of our English Writing book: Shackleton's Journey. As we learnt about how the explorer attempted to cross the continent via the South Pole, we were fortunate enough to have a virtual visitor who was on a ship at the Equator, heading home from Antarctica. She and the crew showed us photographs they'd taken on their expedition... and they'd even retraced parts of Shackleton's route!

Discover

During the Autumn term, Year Six are focusing on a history-based Discover project. Throughout the term, we will explore our big question: What is right?

The Anglo-Saxons and Vikings will form the backbone of our learning and the source of much of our sticky knowledge, but we will also explore our question through other curriculum areas, such as Science and in the life of instrumental scientists like palaeontologist Mary Anning. We will discover how earlier civilisations survived and thrived, and learn about the Anglo-Saxon and Viking struggle for Britain.

As part of our project, we will discover how the Vikings lived, how they travelled – and how they earned their formidable reputation. We will debate whether or not their violent reputation was deserved, how our perception of history can be influenced by the sources we read, and why accounts of an event can differ wildly depending on the perspective of the author.
