Maths

Within Nursery children develop their knowledge of number, shape, size, position and pattern.

Children engage in number rhyme activities, count by rote to 5, then 10 and develop an interest in numbers beyond.

Activities include practical opportunities to count 1:1, match amounts to numerals and begin to record amounts. Children begin to develop an awareness of patterns around them, describe and create repeating patterns. As children practically explore and measure eg capacity, length, weight, height they develop their knowledge and begin to use comparative language. Though engagement with 3D and 2D shapes children become familiar with the properties and names of shapes. As children become confident in maths they begin to pose questions, problem solve and apply their understanding in a range of contexts.
